Welcome to Magma 2010!

The Magma Short Film Festival 2010 - in association with Nga Aho Whakaari, will be presenting its next festival April 29- May 02, 2010 in Rotorua, New Zealand. The venue is the Shambles Theatre, an intimate setting where as well as watching great films, the audience can enjoy drinks and nibbles whilst mingling with film makers and listening to the live music in the lounge area.

The festival is open to all filmmakers from New Zealand and the rest of the world. There is no restriction on age of the filmmaker or on the age of the film.

Magma has the support of some amazing film industry professionals who come each year to share their experiences with the audience and the attending film makers. Come along and get to meet some of them!

guest speakers in 2009 were Grace Hoyt, Karl Zohab and Nick Ward

At Magma 2009 we screened 42 short films from New Zealand and Spain. See the 2009 programme.

Workshops are run by Nga Aho Whakaari and Script to Screen. At the 2009 festival we had a fantastic day of working on script ideas and how to pitch them.

Entries for 2010 close on January 11, 2010. There is no entry fee.  Entry forms are available to download here.

Judges decide winners under the categories of  “Self funded” and “Funded”. We have made these distinctions in consideration of the fact that having a high budget film that might be funded by the likes of the NZ Film Commission, will have advantages in quality over other films with low budgets - whose story telling and craft show great potential and deserve recognition.

From April 1st, 2010 you can buy tickets and book your place for workshops. Buy tickets online here, or at McLeods Booksellers on 1269 Tutanekai St, Rotorua.
